Short On miles Big On Effort

Daily Miles: 45
Avg. Speed: fast
August Total: 715
2008 Total: 7711.08

One of the side effects of changing my training schedule is that I've pretty much cut out the long slow training rides that added so many miles early in the year. I've instead replaced them with hard interval workouts I do during my commute and lots of time in the weightroom.

Yesterday was no exception. i did 10 hard intervals ranging between 30 and 60 seconds on each end of the commute, trying to hit 35 mph each time. By the time I got to the bike shop yesterday I was cooked. It was everything i could do to stand, nevermind carry the ridiculously heavy old steel bikes up out of the dungeon for the many hours of repairs they need.

Anyway, the point is, that now, the only riding I'll be doing is commuting (30-45 a day depending on if i take the bus one way) and cross (with the occasional weekend ride). Couple that with the ridiculous weights program I've designed and I think I'll be doing significantly more work, but I'll end up coming up short by probably 1500 miles or so of my 12,000 mile goal for the year. Still a lot of miles, and probably more then i should be doing if i want to excel at Sprinting, but I got to work somehow, and taking the crappy SEPTA bus is only an option when I can't physically turn the pedals.

Hope it pays off next spring when i put a 53x13 on the track bike and try to break 40 mph during a flying 200 effort.

What Was I Thinking?

Daily Miles: 45 + 25
Avg. Speed: fast
August Total: 670
2008 Total: 7566.08

Yesterday, I went exploring the nether regions of the shop to locate a 3/32 cog. The pickings were slim, with only three choices, a 21, a 19, and a 15. Now, I have no idea why someone would want a 21 tooth cog. It's not very stable, and very likely to flex a lot if you really crank on it. The 19 is what i already have, and the 15 creates a little bigger gear then desired, but it's what i had.

And damn does it make the rides a workout. It's a big freakin gear, the you'll see guys riding up at the track, not up the ridiculous hills around philly. Cranking up these in a 48x15 is exactly what i was going for though when i looking for some hard interval training. This should work pretty damn well, as no longer will i have a problem with spinning out.

Also, yesterday, I had another hard, heavy lifting day. Good times.

While riding around the city yesterday, and this morning, I've decided that all the people who have suddenly taken up riding is both a great and horrific thing. BikeSnob, often talks of salmon, the bikers who ride the wrong way on the street. The current surge in bicyclists has only seriously increased this problem. I don't get it, who in there right minds rides on a one way street or careens down a sidewalk against the flow and thinks it's ok? It makes no sense.

The problem, is that the average driver associates these morons with all the rest of us cyclists. The truth is that these folks are the typical trend followers. They ride bikes because at the current time, it's "cool" to ride a bike. As soon as Hummers go back in style, they'll be the crawling all over each other to get 5 mpg, and drive over curbs and on the sidewalk. I wish we could put signs on these people that state these kind of people aren't cyclists...feel free to run them over...

I'm all for people riding bikes, but i wish there was some sort of mandatory clinic when you buy one that teaches you how to ride it. I'm getting really tired of people on the roads and the path who have no clue what they're doing, and handle their bikes worse then a triathlete (Yes, it is possible...amazing huh?).

Sprinting (or something like it)

Daily Miles: 45
Avg. Speed: fast
August Total: 600
2008 Total: 7496.08

So last week began my foray back into the world of olympic weightlifting. Somewhere there's a video of me cleaning 285 and snatching 192 to place in U-18 Nationals...that sure was a long time ago. Since then I've lifted weights exactly 10 times in six years. I've lost a lot of power. I stepped into Drexel's gym, fully aware that getting back into lifting heavy was going to hurt. I wasn't exactly prepared for how much. Friday's workout was what i used to do in the AM on easy days:

Power Clean-5x5
Front Squat-5x5
Back Squat-5x5
Cleans-1x10
Clean Pulls-5x5

So after i did this workout, I couldn't believe this was only part one that I used to do on easy days. I used to squat every day...It's going to take a while to get back into that.

Sunday I felt like i was getting back into the swing of things and did a bit more of a heavy workout.

Front Squat 5x5
Back Squat 5x5
Deadlift w/ Calf Extension & Shrug 5x5
Hang Cleans 5x5

Then I went home and did some intervals on the bike. Ten 30 second ramp ups and i was cooked.

I think the next time I get back in the gym will be Tuesday. The good thing is that my form hasn't deteriorated, only my power, so hopefully the learning curve will be short, and I'll be well on my way to a 10.3 200m before i know it. I think I'm also going to swap out the 19t cog on the rush hour for a 16t. This will give me a 80in gear that will be more then enough pain on the hills, while allowing me to do some intervals on the path without spinning out...It's going to be a long year of this...

Shit...I had 40 hrs at my first job and 15 at my second job by the time I left The Zoom yesterday. So I negotiated a half day from home at my primary job, giving me a chance to recover. And it was nice, very nice.

Tomorrow, I will discuss weightlifting and sprinting as I will be beginning my olympic lifting program tomorrow...it's going to hurt a lot.

Back to Business

Daily Miles: 45
Avg. Speed: fast
August Total: 510
2008 Total: 7406.08

Today is the last day of having to be at work by 4AM. Although waking up that early is really, REALLY hard to do, the rides have been beautiful, if not a little creepy. I'm the only person around when i leave the house at 2:45, and i might see 2 cars the entire 20ish mile commute.

The moonlight has been really bright the last few days, which illuminates the trail pretty well, but it also adds to the creepy factor. I keep expecting the "Boogeyman" to jump out of the shadows much like that jogger ran out of the woods in front of me a few days ago.

Speaking of which, the shoulder is still pretty sore, but i finally have my range of motion back, and not a moment too soon as I need to begin my olympic lifting sessions ASAP. I just hope the soreness gives way soon as well, as lugging the heavy crappy bikes we get in the shop for service up and down the stairs with a bum shoulder is getting really really old.

While on the topic of bike repair, I got the "honor" of working on a 20+ year old steel roadmaster, the other day that quite honestly would be better used as a refrigerator. As a bike, it's a complete waste of metal. The welds couldn't have been more sloppy (and still held) and the components were no less then 12 yrs and 6 layers of crap past retirement. The chain was completely rusted to the point it was froven, and the cables were frayed more then the 80 year old schizo who hangs out in Love Park. Well, 3 hours, half a can of tri-flow, and 6 shop rags later, that bitch looked brand new. Except wait, the freewheel tolerances were even worse then the welds, and the spacing between the second and third cog wasn't big enough to fit the now pristine chain...nothing like 3 hours for nothing.

So here's the point...don't buy crappy bikes at yard sales that you can't ride home. Chances are there's a reason why it hasn't been ridden in 20 years. Think of old steel bikes as a fine Bordeaux that will get better with age if it's stored properly. If it's not, you have an expensive bottle of vinegar. Or, in this case, a bike that not worth as much as the scrap value of the steel and aluminum.

Suicide Deer

Daily Miles: 45
Avg. Speed: pretty fast
August Total: 465
2008 Total: 7361.08

Today, I had to be at work by 4 AM, so i left my house around 3...which is wicked early...

The ride was really fast though, and the weather was pretty nice. However, for whatever reason, deer seem to like to sleep right by the edge of trail. So along i come, zipping down the path and scare the shit out of them. They jump up and run in whatever direction they can, which happened to tend to be directly in front of me. This happened no fewer then 3 times and really sucked as it scared the living daylights out of me...

Anyway, looks like another busy day, so back at it again...

The Trails

So Saturday I went out on the cross bike and hit the trails in Belmont and the Wiss. It was awesome for the first hour. Then, after feeling pretty good, i decided to hit some of the more difficult single track.

This was all good, and i was loving it until...

Well, of course, i crashed. But it was only because some moron comes running out the woods (not on a trail) right in front of just as i was getting ready to bunny hop a log. So i go flying, come down on my elbow and shoulder really hard.

Damn it hurt.

Oh well, it was still a great time. Cross is going to be a lot of fun this year.

Exam to complete, bike to work on, ride to complete, house to clean...and i have motivation to do it...none.

And it will be a good ride if i ever go out and do it. Planning on a nice ride through Belmont and maybe the Wiss on the cross bike...lots of fun, but to do it i need to get off my ass. I'll go get another pot of coffee in me and we'll see what happens.

Olympic Track Cycling...MIA

So...I'm a little dissapointed with NBC's Olympic coverage. While i understand that Track cycling will never make it into NBC's Primetime Olympic coverage, they don't even bother to broadcast the events online. This is very unfortunate, as there really isn't anything more exciting then the Match Sprint. Of course, If you want to watch hours of Dressage (horses walking in circles), fencing, soccer, or men's field hockey, never fear, there are hours and hours of live streaming video waiting for you!

If anyone knows where I can find video of these events, let me know.

Anyway...working a lot lately, since the bosses are out at Trek Week in beautiful Madison, WI, getting a great view of the 09 Trek bikes. Finally going to get some rest tonight...much needed rest.

Another day is behind me!

I've been noticing that the daylight is starting to wane a bit. Yesterday, when I left the shop at a little after 8 pm, it was dark! In the mornings, it's definitely not as light out. It's quite depressing. I'm not looking forward to putting the headlight back on the bike because this will only start a vicious downward spiral that will lead to wearing two pairs of tights, fleece, wool hat and socks, and still shivering my ass off...

Of course that may seem like a long way off, but it's really not...

First Impressions

Daily Miles: 25
Avg. Speed: pretty fast

So, the first few days of riding the Rush Hour are behind me. All in all, it's a nice bike. I wouldn't ride it on the track, but that's not it's intended purpose even though it's a fixie. Probably the only negative about the bike is the lack of bottle mounts. That said, the bike is really stiff for a steel frame, and the compenent set is suprisingly good for the price. It climbs pretty well and, since it fits me properly, allows me to actually ride hard, unlike the Alpha which left me hoping the welds didn't come apart when I actually put some power into it.

So, even better is that riding it doesn't hurt. I can actually ride to work and home now without getting horrific back pain that i got from the Alpha (because it's a 52cm and I need a 59). So look for my miles totals to start picking back up again.

Olympics and Broken Bikes

Daily Miles: 25
Avg. Speed: pretty fast
August Total: 245
2008 Total: 7151.08

Yesterday, I was riding to my second job at the Zoom going up the rather steep hill from Gulph Mills train station when my bike (The gold Alpha fixie, which is a giant POS) began to make some crazy noises. There was some horrible creaking and what sounded like welds coming apart. Turns out, that's exactly what it was. The Alpha is toast. So, I am now the proud owner of a Raleigh Rush Hour. My first impressions of the bike is that despite it's price, it's not bad. We'll see...What is it with me and bikes? Maybe it's my oversized ass, maybe the way i ride...I don't really know, but it's not much fun.

Across the globe, the action in men's weightlifting is really picking up. The Greco Roman action is pretty exciting as well. And no, I couldn't care less about swimming or gymnastics. Coming up, should be the some of the sprint cycling qualifiers which i can hopefully catch some clips of. Match sprint events this olympics should be really wild.

Anyway, with the olympics online, it's hard to do much of anything except watch them...

Rolling Around the Weekend

Daily Miles: 130
Avg. Speed: pretty fast
August Total: 220

First off, here's a really smart article by Thomas Friedman about increasing our energy independence. The quote that people in this country need to get through their thick skulls is this:

“I have observed that in all other countries, including in America, people are complaining about how prices of [gasoline] are going up,” Denmark’s prime minister, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, told me. “The cure is not to reduce the price, but, on the contrary, to raise it even higher to break our addiction to oil. We are going to introduce a new tax reform in the direction of even higher taxation on energy and the revenue generated on that will be used to cut taxes on personal income — so we will improve incentives to work and improve incentives to save energy and develop renewable energy.”

That aside, this past weekend was both very fun and very busy. Saturday started off right with the 7 AM departure from the Ben Franklin Bridge and the always great 80 mile Uno ride. While the pace was slower then normal, it was still a great ride and the weather was amazing.

Then, after a quick shower, KC and I met Taylor and Julie at Olive Garden for unlimited salad and breadsticks. A great way to finish the ride off. Since we were close to the market we stopped in to get our meat and produce for the week. Reading Terminal Market is ridiculously busy on Saturday and we definitely try not to go, but since we were there, we braved the throngs of moronic out-of-towners. Then we did the "Good American" thing and used L's car while we had it and went to Linen's and Things, Ikea, and Super Fresh (for Dairy).

Finally, Sunday I smoked a pork picnic all day. It was worth it and was delicious. We also cleaned the house and are almost done organizing everything. The house right now actually loooks pretty damn good...and doesn't smell like wet dog. Very Nice.

So today there are a few great posts around the blogosphere both on BikeSnobNYC and Dave Moulton's Bike Blog. Check them out.

Also, check out Lance's trash talking on Cycling News about he's going to three beers in by the time Carmichael finishes the Leadville 100. He might be right, but given the fact that's he's probably not blood doping before this event, his competitors do stand a chance! Go for it Chris!

In other news, I think this Sunday will be the beginning of my Weightlifting re-start. I've been trying to figure out where I put my weightlifting shoes years ago and have no idea. Looks like I'll be doing my cleans and squats in tennis shoes instead...I plan on not walking much on Monday.

And finally, Bobby Lea sure is making a lot of buzz with his USOC issued mask. I really don't get what all the fuss is about. At least his "Beijing" tee-shirt didn't have "Sucks" written under it. Go Bobby!

Back at It

Today I am back at work...

Damn...

Well, anyway, here I am and really tired from driving all night to get my dog from the parents after getting back in Philly at 1 AM Sunday morning.

Keystone was absolutely amazing. If you ever have the chance to go, do it. Seriously. It was absolutely amazing! I will post some pictures later on.
